I suspect those writers took the name from the Welsh god of the sea.

Later in history, Shakespeare appropriated the name for one of his most famous plays.

Throughout art and culture you can hear and see echoes and reflections of the original Atlantean monarch I'm writing about here.

As you will see, the Tragedy of Llyr of Atlantis predates them all.

I must confess that I had trouble focusing on this story until the kid was introduced. (It also helped that you used my last name on the Ed Asner guy...and spelled it correctly!) But now I am totally engaged. I can follow events of a fantastical nature as long as they are interacting with "dull" reality now and then...

The arm in panel four of this page is soooo sweet Kirby, I can barely stand it. When this gets its own book, you'll have to color it. But the black and white reads so cleanly.

However- I still love both him and the Kraken. Probablyt he Kraken more though. I'd love to see the Kraken in a DeNiro role!
