-ALL RIGHT !! this third chapter had it all- sex- violence and the final triumph of love eternal-whew....some nice panels there- but I'm glad it's finally over with...I'd like to compare this opus to another one- Maison Ikkoku -Rumiko Takahashi's masterwork..lasted all of 14 volumes- each volume almost 250 pages each...probably (I'm guessing) the most popular "love romance" ever published in Japan (and maybe- just maybe- the greatest "love" comic ever published anywhere)- all about some young poor struggling student moving into an old run-down Tokoyo boarding house managed by a slightly older beautiful young widow..love at first sight (who hasn't gone through THAT agony/bliss??) -Took them all of 14 volumes and thousands of pages to finally get it together..I usually HATE romance comics...this one was..different...miles and miles of "heart"- completley believable siduations- funny as hell at times...serious at others...unlike any of Ms Takahshi's other series- most based on fantasy elements- Maison Ikkoku is the Real Deal- everything else pales by comparison...
...I think I'd rather wait Until I can check out your shorter pieces, Dean- or untill I get a chance to check out 'The Alcholic' Graphic Novel- The Sex Planet your're workin on seems promising...I get no pleasure running down a talented artist- From what I've read- Harvey Kurtzman used to drive all those multi-talented EC artists crazy by insisting that they follow every damned line of his pencil lay-outs ("My way- or the highway")- I would loved to have had a fly-eye's view of him and Krigsten going at it)- Good luck to you in the coming year (it's probably going to be a hard one)- Be happy in your work
With all due respect, I don't understand the relation between my suggestion to read another comic of mine [if you dug IMMORTAL] and Harvey Kurtzman's supposed work ethic. But, hey, perhaps THE ALCOHOLIC will, um, make light?
I hope you had the chance to read other comix here at ACT-I-VATE.
I'm reading as much as I have time for Dean- Lots of good stuff- some not to my taste - you can't please everyone (and no one should even try- I never cared for the EC Horror comics for example-even though their sales paid for the Sci-Fic and Kurtzman comics that I truly did love- I don't believe Kurtzman made a nickle for Bill Gaines till his Mad comics came out- blew me away- blew everybody away- I grew up so poor that I had to wait to find ECs used at 5 cents @- couln'd wait that long for Mads- I paid full price- Poor Harvey- went on to Humbug- great stuff-15 cents cover price - didn't sell - went on to to that 25-cent mag (was it called Help?) - great stuff- didn't last- Heffner bank-rolled two high-quality issues of Trump -again- great stuff -at $1.50 cover-prce- way too high for yr average 1950's comic fan- so Harvey ( and Elder) went on to doing all that Little Annie Fannny shit-work for Playboy -High- quality shit-work to be sure- but that's all it was- Kurtzman ended a great (low-paying) career making more money working as Hef's "boy" than he ever made doing the important stuff-life shouldn't be that way-but it is...OK- so I'll have a look at Your damned "Fear My Dear" comic- but if I can't find any thing good to say- I aint gona make a single damned comment- (You Damned "Sensitive Artist" types - us lowley fans have feelings also - U NO?)
Dean- I feel I'm wasting much of your valuable time here- You have work to do- My time has a much lesser value- I assure you - so you don't have to reply to this- Thanks for letting me off the Hook on Here My Dear- I checked out a few pages- it didn't seem to be my bag of tea- But how about letting ME make my own decisions about whether I will or will not read anything of yours in future?- If the opprtunity presents itself -and it looks interesting to me I probably WILL read it whether you like it or not- I just won't bother you with any more comments- By the way- if Act-i-vat.com is your creation- You've done a nobel and generous thing here (whether you want to hear that from me or not)- I'm outa here...
..as you suggested..I checked out Cavallro's Parade just now... Beautifull! Bellisimo !(perhaps you know me too well)- Multi Grazie ,Senorie !!!! (Someday I'll look up words to check for correct spelling)
YEs SIR! AT ONCE SIR! ANYTHING YOU SAY SIR ! (why the HELL are you still at your PC?)-It's New Year's eve Man= puts on some Pogues music for Chrissake- crake open a bottle of Tattinger Blanc de Blanc-Im going to the Post Office-my self-that's going to be MY celibration (sell-a-bration?) - I need spell-check- maybe in another life
I'm answering two interviews and editing the plot for the next installment of BILLY DOGMA. Today is a computer day. So, when I get your email prompts, I can't help but respond. It's a knee-jerk thing.
You originally wrote that SNOW DOPE brought you to ACT-I-VATE. Since BILLY DOGMA wasn't your cuppa, didja try reading STREET CODE, my semi-autobio webcomic in the same vein as SNOW DOPE?
..YES!!!- I liked those early slice of life episodes! ( who COULDN"T relate?)- even though my PC went all crazy on me around page 38 or so-(my PC skills are about as bad as My spelling ability)- But I promised not to comment further on your comic work early on- so consider it unsaid- beautiful mood-pieces -but forget I said it- Happy New Year- It's almost here
