Regular readers may notice that I'm experimenting with a new design treatment! I want the strip to have a recognizable graphic "look". I'm not sure whether I'm going to stick with it, so I'd love to know whether you all like it or not! Thanks, -Kevin
I think it is sold, and uses a bit of subliminal B B (Beanbots) in the rounded edges.
I think it would be good to use 6/7 or 5/7 in a run, and then a "Sunday Strip" for your larger ideas (like last week)...even if you are only doing it once a week.
Thanks W.R.! I never thought about that with the rounded edges.
You have a good idea. Unfortunately for me out of the dozens of strips I have written, almost all of them are 'Sunday strips'! This was one of the last ones I had that I could bang out in a hurry at the last minute. Every now and then I think about copping out and putting out the longer ones two tiers at a time or something, but that would just ruin the gag.
Honestly...? My first reaction is the new design overwhelms and detracts from the content. Of course, I always hate it when the magazines I subscribe to undergo a redesign, and then I (usually) get used to it.
But your art style and storytelling is so iconic, and so stylistically focused, that the panel treatment here really does seem unnecessary and/or distracting. Believe me, I know all about branding, but from an aesthetic POV, I'd have to fall back on "you're there already -- don't change a thing!"
Thanks Jim. I really appreciate the straight shooting, as well as the compliments on the style of the strip. Perhaps I'm suffering from a chronic lack of belief in the ability of my work to stand on its own. Maybe I'll try to walk it back a tad, or maybe I'll do one or two more this way and see if it grows on you. Much appreciated man.
Yeah, girls take to phone toys like fish to water. I about fell on the floor when she said, "Hey it's me." Just with the perfect bored inflection, and no idea whatsoever what it was supposed to mean.
You mean you like the ones with the colorful backgrounds, rather than just white space? That's good to know. Do you have an opinion on the new titles and framing elements?
